Assessment of Refugee Youth in Georgia

On May 25, PMC Research presented the findings of a study titled “Assessment of Youth Seeking Asylum, Refugees, and Humanitarian Status-holders in Georgia.”

The study was initiated and funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Georgia and assessed the current situation, including access to rights and services, for asylum seekers, refugees, and humanitarian status-holder youth aged 14-29 in Georgia.

The ultimate goal of the study was to produce recommendations for stakeholders supporting refugee youth, aiming to increase the awareness and knowledge of refugee youth regarding their rights and available services, and their access to services in relation to protection, healthcare, education and learning, transition to work, and participation and engagement.

The event started with the opening remarks from Ms. Kemlin Furley, UNHCR Representative in Georgia, and Ms. Sopho Basilidze, Researcher at PMC Research and the project’s team leader. Ms. Basilidze also presented the findings of the study, followed by a Q&A session facilitated by Parvina Munavarova, Associate Protection Officer at UNHCR.

“Although Georgian legislation provides for a wide range of rights and services available to refugee youth, the study showed that they often do not have sufficient information about them. Therefore, our recommendations to relevant stakeholders, whether they be representatives of the public sector, international organizations, or local NGOs working with refugee youth, are mainly related to raising awareness, as this is crucial in improving their living conditions in Georgia,” said Ms. Basilidze.
