Re-assessing Effectiveness of Sanctions on Russia: PMC Research Shares Insights at First Georgian Economic Association Conference

On July 2-3, PMC Research partook in the 1st International Conference of the Georgian Economic Association (GEA) in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Bringing together leading economists, policymakers, and researchers, the event provided an ideal platform to discuss the latest developments in economics, as well as to present recently completed research.

In the latter regard, Nika Kapanadze, PMC Research’s Head of Private Sector Analytics, delivered a presentation centering on PMCG Ukraine’s bulletin covering an assessment of the sanctions imposed on Russia.

Following up on PMCG Ukraine’s earlier publication on the same issue released in 2022 not long after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the latest bulletin comprises a re-assessment of the effectiveness of the most significant sanctions to have been implemented.

Among various pertinent insights, the bulletin details the existence of several loopholes being exploited by Russia to avoid or at least reduce the impact of sanctions, and urges the taking of more effective measures by Western powers.

The two-day conference, which comprised plenary talks, presentations of research papers, a policy panel, and a poster session, addressed a broad range of economic topics including firm dynamics, development economics, and the effects of digital platforms. Ultimately, the conference sought to foster dialogue and collaboration among professionals, provide a space in which to present cutting-edge research, and tackle key economic challenges facing Georgia and global economy.
